Learn about Urbex:
Alot of people have asked us how they can get into Urbex. From this page we will tell you how you too can get involved in Urban Exploration and some simple tips, so you to can get out there and get exploring as well as other things that are important, such as: Safety, Equipment, Clothing. We'll also speak about ways to discover locations and the law.
_A explorer should always be prepared, by carrying some of this basic equipment it will make your explorations easier and safer as well as a great way to document it for either you to personally remember it or share it online with others. The type of equipment you may require will depend on the sort of places you like to explore. Some a little more necessary then others, where as you can get away going to most places with no equipment which I'm sure will be some peoples preference and has been ours in the past (besides a camera). Always do the sensible thing and tell someone where you are going._
Phones these days have GPS, its a good idea if you know how to use this to track yourself when going to some places (such as drains, tunnels, large complexes) not only will it show the distance you've done but if your in a drain and want to know where you are then your device will be of great help, if you get reception.
Few essentials
*Cameras (DSLR works the best obviously but any camera will do to capture the scenery) + bag
*Perhaps a spare memory card
*LED head lamp or LED torch (ideal to carry a spare)
*Tripod
*Jacket (good idea to always keep warm or keep it handy)
*Old shoes, boots, gumboots depending where you're going
*Dust mask (optional)
Asbestos and dangerous molds
This is another thing, you should always exercise common sense, urbex is all about common sense.
Everything that is wrote here is expressed under a personal opinion of previous visits to locations and it should only be taken as 'advice' and not practiced. Many explorers wear dust/face masks, respirators I personally don't feel the risk is that high with asbestos. Don't touch roofs or walls or floors if you believe it maybe present. Asbestos is often found on ceilings.
Asbestos is known to have a low level of contamination, it is passed into the air through the fibers of the product which you then breath in.
I recall a story we where told when going through an abandoned hospital, a bunch of guys one night tried to rip out the copper pipes etc underneath the service tunnels. The tunnels where full of asbestos and got themselves all covered in it, the police arrived shortly to have to pile the asbestos ridden crim's into the back of the car. What I'm trying to say is it's not as dangerous as it's portrayed. It does do damage over a long duration should you be around it but in small doses it wont kill, we'll hasn't killed us- yet.
Molds, especially black (called Stachybotrys) are very dangerous and inhaling this into your lungs for long periods of time is deadly, it is recommend that any room that has black mold growing you either avoid or spend least amount of time as possible ( take your picture and leave). If you are going to spend time in a room with mold I do recommend wearing a mask of sorts. Molds are the reasons we have damp rotting homes, which of course you probably know causes sore throats and coughs.

Hint.. Always charge your cameras battery the night before, always carry one torch per person especially if draining/tunnels
(mobile phone light doesn't count)
